What is a pre-surgical psychological evaluation?
A pre-surgical psychological evaluation is an assessment of the psychological and behavioral readiness of a patient for a surgery. It is designed to help the patient and surgical team identify areas that are helpful and unhelpful in preparing for surgery and preparing for the life long changes. The assessments typically consist of a clinical interview and some testing to assess mood, pain (if appropriate), cognitive capacity, personality and behavioral patterns, substance use and other psychological factors that can either negatively or positively impact surgical outcomes. These assessments are typically required by insurance prior to bariatric surgery, pain management surgeries (i.e., spinal cord stimulator, pain pump), solid organ transplant, and other surgeries.
